For this tele-town hall, John Yoo, the Emanuel S. Heller Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and The experts begin with a discussion of Texas v. United States, in which a federal judge recently blocked President Obama's executive order granting deferred deportation status to approximately 4 million illegal immigrants. Texas—joined by 25 other states—argued that the Administration circumvented Congress to change immigration law through executive action.
Soon after the federal judge issued the injunction, the 5th Circuit scheduled oral arguments to consider whether to overturn the injunction. The discussion then turns to Wisconsin’s efforts to protect its ballot boxes. In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court acknowledged the real concern that voter fraud could affect a close election's outcome, citing Wisconsin's experience with voter fraud. In 2011, Wisconsin passed a statute requiring voters to present photo ID at the polls.
Opponents of the measure quickly filed four actions in state and federal courts. The Supreme Court recently declined to hear the last of these cases: Frank v. Walker.
