The Claremont Institute helped the Boy Scouts win an important victory when the United States Supreme Court ruled in 2000 in favor of the Boy Scouts' right to free association in Boy Scouts of America v. James Dale. The New Jersey Supreme Court had ruled in 1999 that the Boy Scouts could not exclude James Dale, a homosexual activist and former troop leader, from their organization.
