Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO) is a project of the Claremont Institute launched in 1994. Headed by Dr. Timothy Wheeler, a southern California surgeon, DRGO has become a nationwide network of more than 1,400 physicians, allied health professionals, and others who support the safe and lawful use of firearms.

The Problem
Motivated by deep-seated prejudice against gun owners, groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association are actively working to deprive Americans of one of their constitutional rights — the right to own firearms. These public health gun control advocates make no distinction between law-abiding gun owners and gun-wielding criminals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta have funded and produced "advocacy science" aimed at influencing policy-makers to limit or ban gun ownership. Based on bad science, the public health movement's gun control prescription is also starkly opposed to the American Founders' vision of freedom and responsibility.
The Solution
DRGO's members include experts on public health, firearm technology, gun safety education, and tactical medicine. DRGO is the antidote to those who twist science to serve a misguided political agenda of gun control. We believe that managing the lives of honest citizens does not control crime, but putting criminals out of business does. A well-established body of criminology research shows that millions of assaults, burglaries, and murders are prevented year after year by citizens who use firearms in lawful
self-defense.
DRGO's mission is to expose the poor medical scholarship — and the anti-gun bias behind it — that dominates the medical debate on gun ownership. Our work
includes:
- Participation in an amicus curiae brief for the United States Court of Appeals in the case of United States v. Emerson. The court's decision is a
scholarly discourse upholding the individual right of firearm ownership. - Testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee revealing an aggressive anti-gun agenda at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Congress subsequently cut funding for the CDC's anti-gun "research."
- Participation in a U.S. Supreme Court amicus curiae brief supporting a successful 10th Amendment challenge to the Brady Law. This federal gun control law would have imposed an onerous and unconstitutional enforcement
burden on local governments. - Publication of Firearms: A Handbook for Health Professionals. A quick read, this 25-page booklet summarizes in graphs and text the best contemporary criminology research on firearms used in self-defense. Call 909-621-6825 to order your copy for only $5.
DRGO's message of responsible gun ownership has been featured in national media, including FOXNews television in April 2001 and CBS News 60 Minutes in 2002. We welcome as members all health professionals and anyone who supports
responsible gun ownership and scientific integrity.

Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO) brings its message through public speaking, media appearances, and publications, including opinion articles. We tutor health professionals and the general public in the best available science about firearms. The lesson is that guns in responsible hands save lives, reduce injuries, and protect property by preventing violent crime.
